Steady Flight: Mozilla Thunderbird 3

The long overdue 'Outlook alternative' is now out and flying steadily. Mozilla's Thunderbird 3, available for Windows, Mac and Linux, packs several new features including improvements on the program. From search and message indexing to tabs support and the setup wizard for account management, Thunderbird 3 makes offline email support as easy as possible.
One feature that is not included though is the Calendar feature, Lightning. Originally, Mozilla planned to have it but later on decided to just let the users to download.

Aside for being an outlook replacement, Thunderbird 3 is an ideal offline email storage for different mail providers. Thunderbird 3 has increased its compatibility with Gmail which includes better recognition and integration with Gmail's folders.

The best feature made available in Thunderbird 3 is the search. The new search bar is at the top of the interface, and you have the options to change the default Search All Messages to focus on a particular part of the e-mail: Subject, From, Recipient, To, CC, or message body fields, or to a combination thereof.

It has 1 drawback though and it is the initial indexing which might take 'a while'. It is advised for those who have A LOT of mail to let the program run for a couple of hours or let it sit for 'a day' if you really have that much mail.

Thunderbird 3 is of course freeware which makes it really appealing to the public. It may require some getting used to but with all the new features, learning is a synch.
