Safety for the Online Shopper

Shopping online has become more than just an option for users around the world. With the growing number of online tools
(shopping included), everyone's security is of utmost importance. From home users to the enterprise and corporate shopper, online security needs to be at its best for everybody to not worry.

Here are a few tips to consider when shopping online:

* Keep your system (as well as your browser) updated. Updates, especially Microsoft provide and send out security updates that address vulnerabilities on whichever or whatever part of the OS. This, of course, applies to browser software as well.

* System security in the form of antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall and antispam softwares are definitely a must.

* Use anti-phising software --- some browsers come with a built-in anti-spam/phising filter. Either have them enabled or install a separate program/software.

* Beware of fake websites and cross-site scripting (XSS). These websites and website send malicious coding through the browser which eventually allows unauthorized access to the host system. Some browsers have an auto blocking program built-in to warn users that the website is not safe or secure. Some antivirus programs also provide an automatic blocking system that stops the browser and asks if you want to proceed or not.

* InPrivate browsing and Start Private Browsing options are available in IE8 and Mozilla Firefox which enables private browsing and disables cookies, remember password, temporary internet files and browsing history.

* For payment sites, make sure that they are secure. Payment enabled websites are ALWAYS ENCRYPTED and would, often that not, have https instead of the regular http on the web address. A green address bar or a lock symbol on the status bar or address bar indicate a secure website.

* If someone or a website asks for you to update your information and/or asks that you update your email/password (or both), it would be wise not to.
