Ubuntu 9.10 at a glance

Canonical, the guys behind Ubuntu, delivers Ubuntu 9.10. Dubbed as the Karmic Koala, a lot of changes have been made to this free Linux distro.

So what's new with the new Ubuntu 9.10: Karmic Koala? Let's check out a few things to find out...

Empathy over Pidgin and Ekiga
Users and developers are debating and have argued over this replacement. The replacement Empathy integrates well with the desktop. Users on different platforms (KDE, Mac, Windows) will have to grab a different IM client since Empathy is anchored to GNOME. The replacement is also VoIP capable, thus, eliminating Ekiga.

ext3 >>>> ext4
The system default file system is now replaced by ext4 from ext3. The change was not as smooth compared to the default ext3. Users have reported hangups when transferring large volumes of files that users had to do a restart the system if it stopped responding.

Palimpsest over Gparted
Ubuntu's partition editor changes from Gparted to the new Palimpset app. The new app introduces a better GUI that allows users to see the devices, the partitions and displays them in an easier to use Tree format.
